Becoming a CRPO-Approved Supervisor in Ontario: A Step Toward Deeper Clinical Impact

Thinking about becoming a CRPO-approved supervisor in Ontario? Learn what it takes—from training to registration and how Insight-Online can support your next professional step.

For many experienced therapists, the decision to become a clinical supervisor is both a professional milestone and a deeply meaningful way to give back. As a CRPO-approved supervisor, you not only expand your scope of practice—you help shape the next generation of psychotherapists in Ontario.

At Insight-Online, we work with many therapists who are exploring this transition. Whether you’re looking to formally supervise RP (Qualifying) therapists or simply deepen your reflective practice, becoming a supervisor can be a fulfilling path forward. Here’s what the journey looks like.

What Does It Mean to Be a CRPO-Approved Supervisor?

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) outlines clear criteria for therapists who wish to supervise qualifying registrants. CRPO-approved supervisors are responsible for overseeing the clinical work of newer therapists, offering both guidance and feedback to ensure client care meets professional standards.

This role is more than administrative, it’s relational. Effective supervision helps therapists develop sound clinical judgment, refine their therapeutic voice, and navigate the many challenges that come with early practice. And just like therapy, the supervision relationship benefits from strong structure, curiosity, and care.

Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirement

To apply for supervisor status through CRPO, you must:

  • Hold full registration (not Qualifying) as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in good standing
  • Have relevant and ongoing experience in clinical practice
  • Maintain professional liability insurance that covers supervision activities
  • Be up to date on CRPO’s quality assurance requirements

These foundational elements show that you’re equipped to take on the responsibility of supporting someone else’s clinical development.

Step 2: Complete a CRPO-Approved Supervisor Training Program

The next step is to complete a minimum 30-hour supervision training course that meets CRPO’s educational standards. These programs are designed to help you:

  • Understand models of supervision
  • Learn how to navigate dual roles and ethical responsibilities
  • Support supervisees through reflection, feedback, and clinical insight
  • Develop your own supervisory identity and framework

These training programs are available through a variety of accredited institutions. When choosing one, ensure that it’s explicitly recognized by CRPO as meeting their supervisor education requirem

Step 3: Apply for Supervisor Status

Once you’ve completed the required training, you can submit your application to CRPO to become an approved supervisor. This typically includes:

  • Proof of supervision training completion
  • Verification of your RP status and good standing
  • Confirmation of current professional liability insurance

Once approved, you’ll be listed on the CRPO Public Register as eligible to supervise RP (Qualifying) memb

Why Pursue Supervision?

Supervision is more than a professional upgrade, it’s an opportunity to expand your capacity as a reflective practitioner. Supervisors are often energized by the depth of discussion and critical thinking supervision invites. You’re not just offering answers; you’re helping newer therapists discover their own.

Becoming a supervisor also allows you to:

  • Contribute to the integrity and evolution of the profession
  • Diversify your offerings in private practice
  • Stay grounded in best practices and lifelong learning

Many supervisors report that the process helps them grow in their own clinical work. As you guide others, you refine your ability to articulate your thinking, challenge assumptions, and stay aligned with ethical and relational value
